Locks from this period typically feature robust wooden encasements reinforced with hand-wrought iron straps, designed for maximum security on heavy internal or external timber doors.

They were predominantly constructed using dense domestic hardwoods such as oak, combined with hand-forged iron straps, brass keyhole escutcheons, and complex internal iron mechanisms.

Authenticity is indicated by hand-cut slot screws, forge marks on the ironwork, natural timber shrinkage, and original working mechanisms paired with hand-filed skeletal keys.

Such pieces are often mounted on a display stand or integrated into architectural joinery as a focal point in studies, libraries, or hallway spaces.

Preservation involves applying microcrystalline wax to protect the iron from oxidisation and treating the wood with neutral paste wax to maintain its natural finish without sealing in moisture.
