A Mid Victorian Walnut Centre Table

19th century
Description

A mid Victorian centre table in walnut, the octagonal top with moulded edge and with a broad crossbanded edge in burr walnut, on a recessed frieze with fine ebonised moulded border over a quadruped consisting of a scrolled brace on a turned moulded shaft with a stylised cannon barrel, raised on a crossed base with scrolled supports above carved with paterae and scales, on bracket feet. English, circa 1870.

Condition: Overall very good, the table is in excellent condition with no damage or marks, it stands well with no wobbling, there is one tiny piece missing from the turned barrel, otherwise it has a great appearance and a pleasing colour and patina.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-Victorian centre tables typically feature rich native or imported timber like walnut, elaborate turned pedestals, and carved scroll bases designed to stand in the centre of a room or entrance hall.

Cabinetmakers frequently used solid walnut and figure-rich burr walnut veneers, constructed using traditional joinery, turned stems, and hand-carved decorative motifs.

Look for hand-carved details, original veneer work showing minor natural movement, historical underside construction marks, and concealed castors beneath the carved feet.

Position the table in an entrance foyer as a central feature beneath lighting, or utilise it as an occasional table paired with modern armchairs.

Dust regularly with a dry cloth, apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year along the grain, and keep away from direct heat sources to prevent discolouration.
