Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian desk accessory is an expanding book slide made from dark brown coromandel wood, accented with brass edging around the base and ornate bone strapwork mounts pinned with brass studs. It features rounded arched ends, each pierced with a circular handle hole and fitted with a folding mechanism that allows the length to extend. The surfaces show minor signs of age and use, including surface marks and old repairs. Measuring 18 cm high, 38 cm wide, and 14 cm deep, the piece sits neatly on an office desk to hold and display books in a study or library setting.

FAQs

A book slide is a tabletop accessory developed in the nineteenth century featuring a sliding base and hinged upright ends designed to keep a small selection of books organised on a desk or table.

Victorian craftspeople often used exotic hardwoods such as coromandel, walnut, or rosewood, frequently accessorising them with brass trim, gothic strapwork, bone, or ivory mountings.

Authentic pieces showcase distinctive dark brown and black timber banding, period brass fittings secured with hand-cut screws or brass pins, and smooth internal extension runners.

Place the slide on an office desk, console table, or library shelf to arrange reference books or decorative hardback volumes with traditional elegance.

Dust the item regularly using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax sparingly to the wood while keeping the brass mountings dry and free from moisture.
