A Good Quality, Early 19th Century, Regency Period Mahogany Sofa Table, Having Well Figured Rectangular Drop Flap Top With Ebonised Inlay Decoration, Over Two Frieze Drawers Opposed By Two False Drawers To Reverse, With Replacement Brass Handles, Raised On Elegant Tablet End Supports With Umbrella Splayed Legs And Original Brass Castors.
Sofa Tables were relatively common throughout the 18th and 19th centuries and as the name suggests they were originally designed to sit behind a sofa, although a common misconception is that they were meant to butt right up against the sofa itself.
Actually they were normally designed to sit a few feet away from the sofa, hence the false drawers on reverse. That said they also look quite happy pushed right up against the back of a sofa and are such useful, versatile items of furniture.
This example is of relatively typical design, constructed with good solid mahogany timbers and has the usual two drawers to front, two false drawers to reverse and two folding flap design, which allows for great versatility in terms of how much surface area one wished to utilise.
As with all of our items this Mahogany Sofa Table has been attended to in the traditional manner at our workshops before being offered for sale, by our highly trained and skilled antique furniture restorers including a light clean and natural wax polish to ensure that it is in retail condition and ready to be placed immediately into the home or workplace.
