This Georgian soft-paste porcelain figure group depicts Father Time clipping the wings of Cupid, produced circa 1760 to 1775. The glazed composition is hand-painted in yellow, pink, purple, blue, green, brown, black, turquoise and iron-red overglaze enamels with gilt accents, featuring a bearded winged male figure wearing a pale yellow robe adorned with purple, red and gilt floral patterns and pink lining. Symbolic allegorical items including an hourglass, globe, crown and skull rest upon a scrolling Rococo base picked out in turquoise and gold. The sculpture measures 20 cm high. Placed upon a mantelpiece or displayed within a gentleman's library, the figurine serves as an ornamental centrepiece. The display highlights the intricate polychrome detailing of the soft-paste porcelain, the moulded relief of the base, and the classic allegorical narrative conveyed through the figures and scattered symbolic objects. The underside shows stable firing cracks and correct patches typical of early manufacture.

Derby porcelain figure groups from the 18th century are characteristically crafted from soft-paste porcelain, featuring allegorical, mythological, or pastoral subjects. They feature detailed overglaze enamel painting, gilding, and scrollwork bases inspired by the Rococo style.

Early English figurines were manufactured using soft-paste porcelain, a mixture of clay and ground glass or frit. After an initial firing, the pieces were decorated using metal-oxide enamel paints and leaf gold, requiring multiple kiln firings to set the pigments.

Authentic pieces often display unglazed patches on the underside of the base known as patch marks, resulting from kiln supports. Additionally, period examples exhibit warm, soft-paste body tones, incised model numbers, and hand-painted glaze details characteristic of 18th-century production.

Small porcelain sculptures can be styled on mantelpieces, inside glass display cabinets, or atop stacked art books on a console table. Placing them alongside understated, dark wood or contemporary minimalist surfaces allows their detailed colours and form to stand out.

Porcelain figures should be dusted regularly using a soft, dry makeup brush or feather duster to clean intricate crevices. Avoid submersing soft-paste porcelain in water or using harsh chemical cleaners, as this can damage cold-painted details or historic repairs.
