Rolling bottle coasters became popular during the Georgian and Victorian eras, designed to be passed along the mahogany dining table after the servants had withdrawn, allowing guests to slide wine bottles easily between each other.

These items were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or occasionally walnut, often featuring inset ceramic bases, green baize undersides, or small concealed brass roller wheels.

Authentication relies on examining the patina of the timber, hand-turned construction marks, traditional wax finishes, and the presence of period-appropriate undercarriages such as bone or metal castors.

This piece can be utilised on a sideboard or coffee table as a decorative catch-all for small trinkets or as a functional base for a vintage decanter.

Maintenance requires avoiding excessive moisture and direct sunlight, occasionally feeding the timber with a traditional beeswax polish to nourish the grain and protect the finish.
