Description

Superb huge and extremely rare Minton Meat Platter and matching Drainer (2 pieces). With London Goldsmiths Coat of Arms. Circa 1820. Impressed mark for Size 22.

Minton (1793-1893) in the Bamboo and Flower pattern but with the added coat of arms to the top, part of a corporate personalised service set. The popular Bamboo and Flowers pattern was introduced c. 1820. The pattern is found with no other mark than the Semi China printed mark that is probably the earliest formal printed mark used by Minton.

In excellent condition with only minor frits. Must have only have been used v occasionally. Retaining its full splendour of blue and white, in almost as new and original condition. With the coat of arms, this huge meat platter and paired drainer would have formed a significant piece of the Service.

Both pieces are sold together. A superb collectors item.

Crest: On a wreath Or and gules, A demi virgin issuing from a cloud proper, in a gown gules and kirtle Or, arms extended, holding in the dexter hand proper a balance gold and in the sinister hand a touchstone proper.

Supporters: On either side a unicorn Or, the mane, hoofs and tail argent.

Motto: Justitia virtutum regina - "Justice is the Queen of Virtues".

This large 19th-century Georgian meat platter and matching drainer comes from the Minton pottery, made around 1820 in earthenware with a blue and white underglaze transferware finish. The set depicts the Bamboo and Flower pattern across the surface, featuring a Chinoiserie landscape with bamboo trees, flowers in a vase, and a heraldic coat of arms for the London Goldsmiths positioned above the central hole. A broad floral scroll border adorns the outer rim, whilst the oval perforated drainer insert rests inside the platter with numerous drainage holes and a central finger ring. The piece measures 43 cm high, 57 cm wide, and 6 cm deep. Today, this serving platter sits on top of a dining room sideboard or kitchen table for display, or serves practical functions during family dinners and dinner parties to drain meats before carving. The earthenware ceramic presents a crisp white background covered in rich blue underglaze transfer printing, complete with minor frits that show age while retaining the vibrant colours. The outer platter edge incorporates shaped corners with a raised border, and the central insert includes a small circular handle set flush into the surface to lift the drainer out of the platter base.

FAQs
