Treen refers to small, functional wooden domestic objects made before the widespread use of plastics. Victorian pieces often featured hand-carved motifs reflecting domestic themes, agriculture, or pious inscriptions.

Sycamore and beech were predominantly used by turners and carvers due to their fine, dense grain and resistance to splitting when exposed to moisture and knife blades.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit tool marks from lathe-turning on the underside, hand-carved relief borders, and natural patination and surface knife wear resulting from decades of use.

These pieces function effectively when displayed upright on shelves, mounted on walls as textural elements, or styled flat on kitchen islands and sideboards to introduce organic warmth.

Antique wood should never be submerged in water or placed in a dishwasher. Maintenance involves occasional treatment with food-safe mineral oil or beeswax to prevent the timber from drying and cracking.
