FAQs

Wine coasters became popular in the eighteenth century during formal dining customs, designed to protect polished mahogany dining tables from moisture rings and scratches while bottles were passed around the table.

They were frequently crafted from dense tropical hardwoods like mahogany, often featuring turned profiles, inset wooden bases, and sometimes silver or brass rims to reinforce the structure.

Authenticity is determined by examining the grain patterns, hand-turned tool marks on the underside, timber shrinkage, and appropriate patina consistent with age and historical use.

They can be utilised functionally on a sideboard or coffee table to hold small decorative objects, candles, or decanters, adding textural warmth and historic character to contemporary spaces.

Preservation involves keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight, applying occasional microcrystalline wax to nourish the wood, and avoiding excess moisture.
