Staffordshire pearlware is a type of fine earthenware developed in England during the late 18th century, characterised by a whitish glaze achieved through the addition of a small amount of cobalt.

These figures were typically slip-cast or hand-modelled using refined earthenware clay, then hand-painted under the glaze with metallic oxide colours before firing in a kiln.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit signs of age such as crazing in the glaze, kiln scars on the unglazed base, hand-painted brushwork inconsistencies, and wear consistent with centuries of handling.

Positioning historical ceramics as focal points on a mantelpiece, within a glass-fronted cabinet, or atop a stack of books adds a layer of curated historical interest to contemporary spaces.

Keep ceramic pieces out of direct sunlight, avoid using liquid cleaners or abrasive cloths, and dust gently with a soft, dry brush to preserve the delicate glaze and painted surface.
