This matching pair of 1900 wall brackets belongs to the Rococo Revival style, fashioned from hand-carved wood in a warm brown colour with a rich aged patina. Each bracket displays ornate volute scrolls at the top, central shell fluting, and elaborate lower decorations consisting of floral carvings, acanthus leaves, and trailing leaf details beneath a moulded shaped shelf. Practical wall mounting plates are already fitted to the backs. Each bracket measures 40 cm high, 32 cm wide, and 11 cm deep. These decorative architectural corbels suit placement on a narrow wall space to display ornaments, small vases, or candles in a hallway, drawing room, or study. They bring period character to interior settings and easily integrate into traditional or French chateau decorative schemes.

Wall brackets and corbels gained prominence in 18th-century Europe, particularly in France, as decorative supports for porcelain, clocks, and small busts. The Rococo period introduced asymmetrical curves, scrollwork, shell fluting, and organic botanical carvings to these architectural elements.

Traditional corbels were hand-carved from hardwoods such as oak, walnut, lime wood, or mahogany using gouges and chisels. They were often finished with natural wax polishes, stains, or gesso and gilding to protect the timber and highlight the carved relief.

Authentic period pieces show subtle irregularities in the hand-carving marks, natural contraction of the wood along the grain, and historic patina or wax buildup in carved crevices. The reverse side typically features hand-cut mounting slots or forged iron fittings rather than modern recessed keyhole hardware.

Carved brackets can be mounted on narrow wall spaces to display ceramic vases, small bronze sculptures, or trailing plants. They can also flank a mantelpiece or wall mirror to add sculptural architectural depth to a room.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry bristle brush to reach into deep relief carving without scratching the wood. Apply a quality beeswax polish occasionally with a soft cloth to nourish the timber, avoiding wet cleaning agents or placement near direct heat sources.
