Hoshiarpur Anglo Indian Inlaid Octagonal Table C1880

Description

A rare and stunning profusely inlaid Hoshiapur octagonal table with barbers pole decoration to the top edge and side hinged panels. This fine quality table is lavishly inlaid to the top with peacocks, floral, foliate and quatrefoil designs. The floral, folate and quatrefoil design carry on down the eight sided base. Made from Shisham wood, which is a deciduous tree of the Himalayan tract, and is one of the most esteemed woods used for furniture making in the north of India. This occasional side table was made around 1880 probably from the Hoshiapur area in the Punjab, this area was renowned for their superb intricate inlay work. This Moorish style of furniture was very popular during the latter part of the 19th century and similar tables were sold by Liberty of London. This decorative table is in very good condition and structurally sound, already to grace anyone’s home.
