Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

This pair of 19th-century Victorian over-and-under percussion pistols sits inside an open fitted mahogany case lined with dark blue velvet alongside antique accessories. The dark brown steel barrels pair with finely checkered walnut grips and engraved lockplates, complemented by brass hardware on the exterior of the wooden box. The set includes two multi-barrel pistols resting horizontally in custom-moulded slots, a brass cleaning rod, bullet mould, and small containers housed in partitioned velvet compartments. The timber case measures 13.5 cm across the barrel length, with brass hinges and a central key escutcheon visible on the front edge. Collectors place this grouping inside a gentleman's library or study on a bookshelf for display.

Cased percussion pistols are 19th-century firearms utilising a percussion cap ignition system, traditionally stored in fitted wooden boxes with dedicated compartments for accessories such as powder flasks, bullet moulds, and tools.

These sets typically feature forged steel or iron barrels, finely carved walnut stocks, and brass or steel mounts, housed inside a polished mahogany or oak case lined with baize or velvet.

Authentic pieces generally display period proof marks on the barrels or breeches, period-appropriate hand-engraving, precise mechanical fitting, and natural age-related patina on both the metalwork and fitted case interior.

In modern interior design, cased antique pistols are frequently showcased open inside glazed display cabinets, on library shelving, or atop a study desk to serve as a focal historical display object.

Metal components should be wiped with a microfibre cloth and treated with a light application of acid-free microcrystalline wax or mineral oil to prevent rust, while the wooden case and fabric lining should be kept in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight.
