We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A tin-glazed charger is a large decorative ceramic plate finished with an opaque white glaze containing tin oxide, historically used for display or serving. Originating in the Middle East, the technique spread through Islamic Spain to Italy as maiolica, and later influenced European faience and delftware traditions.

These pieces are crafted from a secondary clay body, fired into a biscuit form, and coated with a liquid glaze containing tin oxide to create a white, opaque surface. Pigments derived from metal oxides like copper, cobalt, and antimony are then painted directly onto the unfired glaze before a final high-temperature firing.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit irregularities in the glaze, such as pinholes, pooling, and minor crazing resulting from historical firing methods. The footrim often shows unglazed earthenware clay, and the hand-painted pigments display natural variations and softness distinct from modern transfer prints.

Antique chargers can be mounted on a wall as sculptural art using specialised plate hangers or displayed upright on a sideboard using a sturdy metal stand. Pairing historical ceramics with clean-lined contemporary furniture creates a balanced contrast that highlights the artisanal texture of the piece.

Antique tin-glazed items should be kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent further glaze deterioration and crazing. Cleaning should be limited to gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding immersion in water or the use of chemical cleaning agents.
