Georgian 18th Century Mahogany Sofa Table (United Kingdom

18th century
Description

A Very Good Quality Late 18th Century Georgian Mahogany Sofa Table, Having Superbly Figured Two Flap Top Bearing Crossbanded Decoration, Over Two Drawers To Frieze Opposed By Dummy Drawers To Reverse, Raised On Elegant Square Tablet End Supports Terminating On Sabre Legs With Original Brass Castors.

Sofa Tables were relatively common throughout the 18th and 19th centuries and as the name suggests they were originally designed to sit behind a sofa, although a common misconception

is that they were meant to butt right up against the sofa itself.

Actually they were normally designed to sit a few feet away from the sofa, hence the false drawers on reverse. That said they also look quite happy pushed right up against the back of a sofa and are such useful, versatile items of furniture.

This particular sofa table is constructed from well figured, good quality, mahogany and has real elegance, which is enhanced by the simplicity of its design. Well constructed, using high grade materials, this item has clearly been produced in a well respected workshop and due to the quality of its materials and construction it remains in excellent clean, functional condition.

As with all of our items this Mahogany Sofa Table has been attended to in the traditional manner at our workshops before being offered for sale, by our highly trained and skilled antique furniture restorers including a light clean and natural wax polish to ensure that it is in retail condition and ready to be placed immediately into the home or workplace.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sofa tables emerged in the late 18th century during the Georgian period, specifically designed to be positioned behind a sofa to hold reading materials, tea sets, or writing equipment.

These tables were primarily crafted from dense West Indian mahogany or satinwood, often featuring fine veneer crossbanding, pine drawer linings, and cast brass hardware or castors.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, irregular hand-sawn timber underside finishes, natural shrinkage lines, and original brass castors secured to splayed legs.

Position the table directly behind a freestanding sofa or against a long wall as a hallway console, styled with contemporary table lamps and ceramic decorative accents.

Apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, keep the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement, and protect the polished top surface from moisture.
