A Mid-19th Century Amboyna & Giltwood Centre Table

The striking amboyna veneered rectangular top above a reeded and leaf decorated giltwood frieze. Pierced scroll and leaf decorated supports, joined by an undulating stretcher, centred by a finial. On downswept legs and scroll feet.

English, circa 1845

Amboyna wood, characterised by its uniform small curls and knots was not commonly seen before the second decade of the 19th century. Found on the so-called "Spice Islands" of present-day Indonesia, veneers of this 'exceedingly beautiful and highly ornamental wood' had their Golden Age up until the mid-19th century, when it was superseded by African thuya wood.

This mid-19th century Victorian Rococo Revival centre table combines a figured warm brown amboyna veneered rectangular top with a gold leaf giltwood trestle base. The frieze has a reeded and leaf decorated moulding, positioned above pierced scroll and leaf carved supports. These uprights link to an undulating serpentine stretcher, which features a central turned finial and terminates in downswept scroll feet. The piece stands 75 cm high, 137 cm wide, and 76 cm deep, occupying a footprint well-suited for placement as a freestanding centrepiece in a reception room or study. It remains in unrestored original condition, showing characterful signs of age across its surfaces.
