FAQs

Allegorical representations of the theological virtues of Faith, Hope, and Charity have been popular in European art and decorative objects since the Renaissance, seeing a particular surge in popularity among British and continental ceramicists during the 18th and 19th centuries.

These pieces were typically crafted from earthenware, stoneware, or early soft-paste porcelain, often hand-modelled or slip-cast in moulds before being hand-painted with polychrome glazes and fired in traditional kilns.

Authenticity is determined by examining the crazing in the glaze, the presence of kiln marks or unglazed bases, tool marks from hand-finishing, and the specific composition and palette of the ceramic pigments consistent with historical manufacturing methods.

These pieces work well as focal points on mantelpieces, within glass-fronted cabinets, or styled on bookshelves where their historic character and sculptural form can add texture and narrative depth to a room.

Keep ceramic figures out of direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, dust them gently with a soft dry brush, and avoid using liquid cleaners or water, especially if the glaze exhibits age-related crazing or hairline fractures.
