18th Century Meissen Porcelain Figure, Piedmontese bagpiper.

Modelled by J.J. Kändler after an engraving by Jacques Dumont, wearing a black hat with brown feather, fur-lined white cape, yellow waistcoat with Sgraffito scrolls and circles and white leggings, playing the bagpipes and standing on an oval mound base applied with flowers and foliage (restoration likely though not obvious). Crossed swords mark to rear of base and reputable French dealer stamp.

Meissen was the first European manufactory to discover the secret of hard-paste porcelain in 1708. During the 18th century, master modellers created detailed figures depicting musicians, tradespeople, and allegorical subjects, setting the standard for European ceramic production.

Figures were cast in press moulds from multiple separate parts, joined using liquid clay slip, and fired at high temperatures. After the initial glaze firing, artisan painters applied overglaze enamels and gilding before executing a secondary lower-temperature firing.

Authentic pieces feature the underglaze blue crossed swords factory mark on the underside. Period examples show distinct characteristic hand-modelling details, sharp moulding seams, paste composition weight, and specific historical enamel palette tones.

Small ceramic sculptures serve as accent objects on styled bookshelves, mantelpieces, or inside glazed display cabinets. Placing them alongside understated contemporary backdrop elements highlights their detailed profile and craftsmanship.
