Butlers trays originated in 18th-century English households, designed with hinged sides so servants could easily carry food and tea from the kitchen to the dining room or drawing room before resting the tray upon a folding X-frame stand.

Authentic period pieces were typically constructed from dense hardwoods like Cuban or Honduras mahogany, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, brass hinges, and shaped handles carved directly into the gallery sides.

Identification relies on examining the timber patina, hand-forged brass hardware, hand-cut joinery, and the weight and grain of the mahogany, alongside signs of genuine wear and oxidisation consistent with age.

This piece functions effectively as a versatile side table or a drinks trolley alternative in a living room, offering portability and rich warmth that complements contemporary minimalist or traditional spaces alike.

Maintain the wood by dusting with a soft, dry cloth and applying natural beeswax periodically to nourish the grain, avoiding direct sunlight and excessive humidity to prevent warping.
