We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 19th century, terracotta gained widespread popularity across Britain and Europe for garden ornaments due to advancements in manufacturing techniques and a revival of neoclassical aesthetics. These urns were frequently modelled after ancient Greek and Roman vessels to decorate formal garden terraces, country estate grounds, and grand conservatories.

Traditional terracotta urns were crafted from refined clay pressed or cast into plaster moulds, often created in multiple sections including the rim, body, mask details, and pedestal base. The assembled components were joined using clay slip before being fired at high temperatures to ensure durability against weather exposure.

Authentic period pieces typically exhibit crisp, hand-finished mould details, subtle variations in clay colour, and natural surface patination such as lichen or moss growth. Older terracotta often features substantial weight from dense clay, seam lines from historical multi-part moulding, and natural weathering along raised details.

A weathered terracotta urn serves as an architectural focal point on a terrace, flanking an entranceway, or positioned at the termination of a garden path. Indoors, it functions in a sunlit conservatory, entrance porch, or hallway, placed directly on stone flooring to introduce historical texture.

To prevent frost damage in colder months, ensure adequate drainage holes remain clear and raise the urn slightly off wet ground using pot feet. Clean the surface using water and a soft-bristled brush, avoiding harsh chemical treatments or high-pressure washing that would strip the established historical patina.
