Developed in the mid-19th century, Parian ware is a type of unglazed biscuit porcelain formulated to imitate carved Parian marble. It enabled fine art sculptures to be mass-produced for Victorian domestic interiors.

Parian ware was produced using a vitrified feldspathic porcelain body containing a high proportion of feldspar. The liquid slip was poured into plaster moulds to achieve detailed statuettes without requiring a glaze.

Authentic pieces exhibit a smooth, marble-like tactile finish rather than a chalky texture. Look for detailed moulding, subtle translucency around thin edges, and maker marks from potteries such as Minton or Copeland.

Position the figure against a dark backdrop or inside an illuminated alcove to highlight its white silhouette and sculpted features.

Clean unglazed Parian porcelain using warm water with mild soap and a soft-bristled brush to remove dust from crevices. Avoid abrasive pads or harsh chemicals that can discolour the ceramic surface.
