Oriental Hardwood 19th Century Rectangular Coffee Table

19th century
Description

A Very Attractive Late 19th Century Chinese Export, Oriental Hardwood Coffee Table Of Rectangular Form, Having Inset Marble To Top Over Profusely Carved & Pierced Frieze, Raised On Elegant Carved Cabriole Legs United By Cross Stretcher.

Many items were produced in China for the western market from early in the 19th century and beyond. These items are commonly referred to now as having been made for the Chinese Export market and the most prolifically found of these items tend to be coffee tables, opium tables, nests of tables and to a slightly lesser extent altar type side tables.

One of the reasons these types of items prove so popular in the modern worls is because it is of course very difficult to find genuine european antique 18th and 19th century items of furniture which would suit as a modern day coffee table, as they simply didn’t make, or use low tables in europe during antique times.

This coffee table is particularly elegant, constructed from rich, dense oriental hardwood which is particularly hard wearing and combined with a marble top, meaning the table is perfectly suitable for warm mugs, spilt drinks and other similar events which occur in day to day life.

As with all items we offer for sale it has been inspected by our highly skilled, specialist, traditional antique furniture restorers before being made available for sale, to ensure that it is in absolutely tip top condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Crafted during the late Qing Dynasty, these pieces were made for both domestic use and export to Western markets. They typically feature dense dark hardwoods, intricate hand-carved friezes displaying botanical or faunal motifs, and inset marble panels.

These tables were constructed using dense tropical hardwoods such as padouk, rosewood, or zitan. The tops frequently feature inset slabs of variegated marble or soapstone chosen for their natural wave-like patterns.

Authentic pieces feature traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery without metal nails, hand-carved pierced aprons, significant physical weight due to timber density, and natural surface wear along the base and edges.

Position the piece as a central low coffee table surrounded by contemporary tailored seating. The rich timber tones and carved detail provide tactile contrast against minimalist fabrics and neutral colour palettes.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply natural beeswax to the timber sections annually. Clean the marble top using only pH-neutral stone cleaners to prevent etching or discolouration.
