Description

A late 19thC miniature portrait of a devout lady handpainted on an oval porcelain plaque c1880. This is very likely a continental, possibly Berlin, piece. The portrait depicts a lady in sumptuous robes, with a cross and headdress, costume typical of Northern Europe. The whole is delicately painted but especially the face. The reverse bears a makers stamp - 15. The portrait is housed in a black lacquer frame, which has a minor chip at one corner, not surprising for an antique piece. The plaque itself is in excellent condition. The back has been relined with brown paper.

Image size 8cm high x 6.5cm wide.

FAQs

Porcelain portrait plaques gained popularity in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries, often created in notable ceramic manufactories as miniature works of fine art.

These items typically consist of fired hard-paste or soft-paste porcelain painted with ceramic enamels, then kiln-fired to fuse the pigments before mounting in a custom wooden or metal frame.

Authenticity is usually determined by inspecting the fineness of the hand-painting brushwork, kiln marks on the reverse of the porcelain, and the age-appropriate construction of the surrounding frame.

This piece works effectively when displayed on a narrow wall space or mantelpiece to add historical depth and a focal point to a curated gallery wall.

Keep the plaque away from direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, and clean the glass frame gently with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical sprays.
