Chinoiserie represents the European interpretation and imitation of East Asian artistic traditions, particularly popular during the 17th and 18th centuries and experiencing revivals in the Victorian and mid-20th century periods.

These pieces typically feature a wooden base coated with multiple layers of lacquer or varnish, often decorated with hand-painted motifs or gold leaf application, commonly referred to as gilt or painted highlights.

Authentic vintage pieces often show signs of age-appropriate craquelure, natural wear to the lacquer surface, hand-applied pigments rather than modern printing, and traditional joinery methods on the underside.

These versatile pieces function well as accent surfaces beside contemporary upholstery, providing a contrasting textural element and a dark focal point within a neutral or minimalist room scheme.

Lacquered items should be dusted regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, alcohol, or direct sunlight to prevent fading and cracking of the delicate finish.
