Description

A fantastic original antique William IV period mahogany occasional table. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1830-1840 period.

It is of amazing quality, with a very strong and gutsy design. The central column base has beautiful carving and sits on three legs which are also beautifully carved. The circular top is a great size and has a lovely moulded edge.

We have had this re-polished to a very high standard, it is in excellent condition for its age. There are some minor bumps and marks remaining beneath the polish, commensurate for age. Overall this has a gorgeous colour tone and stunning patina.

The William IV period spans roughly from 1830 to 1837, acting as a transitional phase between Regency and early Victorian styles. It is characterised by robust proportions, classical architectural influences, and heavy use of dense timbers like mahogany with restrained yet bold carved detailing.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid and veneered Cuban or Honduras mahogany, chosen for its rich grain and depth of colour. Traditional construction involved precision joinery, turned central pillars fixed to sturdy tripod or platform bases, and hand-applied shellac French polish finishes.

Authentication involves examining the timber grain, patination, and construction markers such as hand-cut screws or dovetails. William IV pieces generally feature heavier, bolder carvings like lotus leaf motifs, gadrooning, and scrolled feet compared to the more delicate Regency era.

Pairing historical timber pieces with modern upholstery and clean architectural lines creates a balanced, layered interior. A small pedestal table works effectively as a functional surface beside a sofa or in an unused corner, adding warmth and historical texture to the space.

Maintain antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting and fading. Clean periodically with a soft, dry cloth and nourish the wood occasionally with traditional beeswax, avoiding silicone-based commercial polishes.
