Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian work table dates from 1880 and takes the form of a sewing table constructed from warm brown burr walnut veneer with brass hardware. The piece stands 72 cm high, 65 cm wide and 43 cm deep, making it suited for placement in an empty corner of a living room or bedroom. The hinged lid lifts to reveal a fitted interior containing compartments and intricate pierced fretwork panels over storage wells, complemented by the original lock and a tassel key. The structure rests on well-carved cabriole legs with scrolled feet, connected by turned supports and a central stretcher. The exterior displays an original patinated finish showing minor blemishes and marks from age and use, while the interior compartment features a green fabric lining. The decorative fretwork covers include small old repairs, and the turned wooden columns feature detailed carved elements near the base. The table serves as both a decorative furnishing and a practical accent piece for storing small items in a home today.

FAQs

Victorian work tables were small occasional tables designed specifically for storing needlework, embroidery tools, and crafting materials in private drawing rooms.

These tables were typically built using timber carcasses veneered with figurative woods such as burr walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, lined internally with pine or cedar and brass fittings.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass hinges, natural age-related patination, and hand-carved decorative elements such as fretwork or turned supports.

These versatile pieces serve well as decorative accent tables in living rooms, hallway nooks, or bedrooms, providing both character and discreet storage for small items.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the veneer from drying or lifting, and polish regularly with a natural beeswax product using a soft cloth.
