Antique 2 French Electro Therapy Devices "Institut Electrotherapy" Dated 1905

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Regent Antiques
Description

Of scientific interest two French Electrotherapy devices, both wih plaques to the tops stamped "Institut Electrotherapy, 27 Rue Godot de Mauroy, Paris"

Complete with original instructions dated 27th September 1905.

These are very good example of early 20th century electrotherapy / electric shock machines. These early battery operated devices produced a noticeable, but low powered, electric current that was applied to various body parts. It was believed that such stimulation could help with a multitude of nervous disorders.

These all-in-one units contained a battery, coil, voltage controls and a number of contact probes and connecting wires. These are housed within a sturdy wooden body, with compartment for accessories.

The boxes have carry handle and close with clasps. There is age related ware to these items.

The effectiveness of these types of devices was unconvincing, and for safety reasons these should not be used. However, they make excellent display pieces and are ideal for collectors.

Condition:

As antique items, the pieces show signs of use commensurate with age, these condition issues are mentioned for accuracy and, as seen in the accompanying photographs they display beautifully.

They are for decorative use only.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, electrotherapy machines were medical apparatuses designed to apply mild electrical currents to the human body for supposed therapeutic benefit.

These instruments were typically housed in polished timber cases, such as mahogany or walnut, and contained internal components made from brass, nickel-plated metal, glass, and copper coils wrapped in silk or cotton thread.

Authentic pieces display period-appropriate joinery on timber cases, original brass terminals, maker plates, age-related patination, and cloth-covered wiring rather than modern plastic insulation.

These technical items serve as distinct decorative accents when displayed open on a bookshelf, within a cabinet of curiosities, or positioned on an office desk in a dark academia or eclectic setting.

Keep the wooden enclosure in a climate-controlled room away from direct sunlight, dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth, and apply natural beeswax polish to the timber while avoiding liquid cleaners on electrical parts.
