Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Lipped edges on drawer fronts: early drawer design before cockbeading became standard.
Cabriole legs ending in pad feet: shaping favoured across the mid-eighteenth century.
Cast brass handles with shaped backplates: rococo pattern introduced around the 1750s.
Solid mahogany top with softened moulded edge: natural timber movement over time.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 18th century Georgian lowboy side table is made of dark brown figured mahogany and brass. The dark rectangular top has a moulded edge above a central long oak-lined drawer flanked by two short drawers, all fitted with brass swan-neck handles and a central keyhole escutcheon. A shaped apron runs along the base above cabriole legs terminating in pad feet. The wood has a visible patina across its surfaces. The lowboy measures 70.5 cm high, 76.5 cm wide, and 48.5 cm deep. It functions as a side table and is placed beside the front door in an English country house interior today.

FAQs

A lowboy is a small table with drawers, originally designed in the 18th century to serve as a dressing table or side table in British and American homes.

George III lowboys were primarily constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany and walnut, often featuring solid oak or pine drawer linings and brass drop handles.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, original oak drawer bottoms with grain running front-to-back or side-to-side, hand-cast brass hardware, and hand-planed underside surfaces.

A Georgian lowboy functions well as an entryway console or hall table paired with a contemporary mirror above, bridging historical craftsmanship with modern decor.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically along the wood grain, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight.
