FAQs

The Louis XVI style emerged in France during the late 18th century as a reaction against the excessive curves of Rococo, favouring classical symmetry, straight lines, and motifs inspired by archaeological discoveries at Pompeii.

Authentic pieces typically feature hand-carved wood frames, often painted or gilded, topped with shaped marble slabs and joined using traditional mortise and tenon construction.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the hand-tool marks, the type of joinery, the ageing of the gesso and paint finishes, and the natural patination of the marble and wood.

Position it against a focal wall in an entryway or living room, paired with a gilded mirror above and minimal decorative objects to highlight its classical proportions.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, dusting gently with a soft dry cloth and avoiding chemical cleaners that can damage the delicate finish.
