FAQs

Victorian glass domes, often referred to as gazing balls or cloches, gained immense popularity during the 19th century as a means to protect and display delicate items such as taxidermy, preserved flowers, clocks, and wax models from dust and damage in domestic interiors.

Traditional domes were typically hand-blown using cylinder or crown glass methods, resulting in characteristic minor imperfections and thickness variations. The bases were usually crafted from ebonised wood, mahogany, or velvet-covered panels, often incorporating a mirrored surface to reflect light through the displayed object.

Authentic period domes often feature slight waviness, tiny air bubbles, and a pontil mark or uneven thickness at the apex due to mouth-blowing techniques. The wooden or mirrored bases should show genuine signs of age, oxidisation, and period-appropriate construction methods.

An antique glass dome functions as an ideal focal point on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table, used to house architectural fragments, minerals, coral, or sculptural objects to introduce a layer of historic curiosity and texture into modern spaces.

The glass should be cleaned carefully using a soft lint-free cloth and a mild glass cleaner, avoiding harsh chemicals that could damage antique finishes on the base. The delicate mouth-blown glass requires careful handling to prevent scratching or chipping.
