Cast iron doorstops, also known as door porters, originated in the eighteenth century to hold heavy timber doors open, evolving into decorative household ornaments during the nineteenth century.

Traditional doorstops were cast using molten iron poured into sand moulds, often finished with polychrome oil paints and occasionally mounted onto wooden plinths for additional weight and stability.
