Granite troughs were historically utilised in agriculture during the 18th and 19th centuries as feeding and watering vessels for livestock, or as water stores on farms.

They were traditionally hand-chiselled from solid blocks of regional granite, such as Cornish granite, using mallet and chisel techniques.

Authenticity is indicated by tool marks from hand-chiselling, natural weathering, lichen growth, and irregular dimensions typical of pre-industrial quarrying.

They are frequently utilised as focal planters for alpines or ferns, or repurposed as water features within a landscaped courtyard.

Minimal maintenance is needed, though ensuring adequate drainage during freezing winter months prevents frost damage to the stone structure.
