Description

A Fine example of a Blue & White Elephant design transfer print Sauce Tureen, matching Lion head Cover and matching base, Rogers, circa 1825. This complete set is in remarkable undamaged and unrestored condition. Just a couple of glaze defects throughout the set. The Tureen base and stand are both impressed Rogers. Another example of the Zebra design is illustrated on page 63 Blue & White Transfer Ware 1780 to 1840 by A W Coysh.

Size Tureen approx. 20cm long by 11.5cm wide and approx. 14cm high excluding the stand, stand is 20.5cm long by 14.5cm wide and 2.2cm deep. Price £295.00 including shipping within the UK.

Transferware is a method of decorating ceramics developed in England during the late 18th century, where patterns were engraved onto copper plates, printed onto tissue paper, and transferred onto the unglazed earthenware body prior to glazing.

Georgian sauce tureens were primarily constructed from refined white earthenware or ironstone ceramics, decorated with cobalt oxide blue underglaze inks and sealed with a clear lead glaze.

Authentic Rogers ceramics usually feature an impressed makers mark reading ROGERS on the underside of the base, along with characteristic dark cobalt blue transfer designs and period-appropriate glaze crazing.

A sauce tureen can be displayed as a standalone decorative accent on a dining room sideboard, integrated into a dresser display among matching blue ceramics, or used on open kitchen shelving.
