This large carved wooden Chinese dragon torchiere dates to 1880 in the Chinese Qing Dynasty style. The dark brown hand-carved hardwood object has a gadrooned rim at the circular top, a coiled dragon in relief with a visible dragon head and twisted serpent body wrapped around the central column, cloud motifs, and a Greek key border on the square base. The piece measures 108 cm high, 40 cm wide, and 40 cm deep. In a home today, this pedestal functions as a display stand in an empty corner of a gentleman's library. The vertical column design supports decorative objects while adding traditional craftsmanship to the room.

FAQs

A torchiere stand is a tall, decorative column historically designed to support a light source, candle, or decorative vessel, frequently featuring carved dragon motifs popular in traditional Chinese woodwork.

Traditional Chinese torchieres were sculpted from dense hardwoods such as teak, rosewood, or elm, utilising intricate relief carving techniques and mortise-and-tenon joinery without relying on modern fasteners.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-tool marks within deep relief work, natural age contraction across the timber joints, a deep developed patina, and smooth wear on high-touch carved edges.

A carved dragon pedestal creates a focal point when placed in an entryway or alcove, topped with a plain ceramic vase, bronze sculpture, or trailing houseplant to balance the detailed carving.

Regular dusting with a soft, dry brush removes debris from carved recesses, while a light application of natural beeswax paste protects the hardwood and preserves the original finish.
