This nineteenth-century tray table exemplifies Victorian Chinoiserie style, constructed from lacquered wood, papier-mache, and gold leaf. The piece presents a black and gold colour scheme, featuring a removable tray top with a raised rim and hand-painted gold leaf scenes depicting traditional Chinese social gatherings, architecture, plants, and foliage. The base incorporates a turned central stem supported by three scroll feet, displaying matching gold hand-painted ornamentation. A visible shrinkage split runs through the centre of the tray, preserved in original condition with signs of age and wear. The dimensions measure 73 cm high, 79.3 cm wide, and 57 cm deep. Suitable as an occasional table, this item functions well placed at the end of a sofa in a living room, drawing room, or hallway to hold decorative objects or small accessories. The compact footprint fits neatly beside seating arrangements while offering a stable surface raised on its tripod pedestal base.

Chinoiserie lacquered furniture refers to European decorative pieces produced to imitate East Asian lacquerware techniques using shellac or varnish. Popular throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, these pieces feature dark background coatings adorned with hand-painted gilded foliage, figures, and geometric borders.

These tables were typically framed in dense hardwoods or papier-mache for the tray top, mounted onto turned wooden pedestal columns. The surfaces were built up with multiple layers of dark lacquer or varnish before hand-painting with gold leaf, bronze powders, and pigmented enamels.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display fine craquelure or micro-fracturing in the varnish due to natural age shrinkage. Examination of the underside often reveals hand-cut joinery, irregular turned column proportions, and signs of oxidisation on metal fixings or structural pins.

Place the table as an occasional surface beside a sofa, armchair, or within a reading corner to serve as a visual focal point. Its dark finish and gilded detailing complement both traditional period living rooms and contemporary minimalist spaces seeking contrasting texture.

Dust surfaces regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or water which can cloud the varnish. Keep the item away from direct sunlight and severe humidity fluctuations to prevent cracking, lifting, or fading of the delicate gilding.
