Regency Footed Pottery Bowl C1830

Description

This attractive POTTERY FOOTED BOWL, decorated in a MAGENTA coloured transfer print of an imaginary Classical Garden Scene within a ROSE BORDER, dates from circa 1830.

It bears a capital ‘P’ to the underside which is possibly the mark of Pountney and Allies of the Bristol Pottery, Gloucester.

The BOWL is in good condition with no cracks, chips or restoration.

Diameter: 9.5 inches (24 cm)

Transferware pottery gained immense popularity in Britain during the Regency period, expanding on late 18th-century technique innovations. Craftsmen used engraved copperplates to print intricate patterns onto paper, which were then transferred onto earthenware objects prior to glazing.

Regency table ceramics were typically made from lead-glazed earthenware or ironstone. Items such as footed bowls were formed using press-moulding for structural elements like pedestal bases, decorated with underglaze tissue transfers, and fired at high temperatures.

Authentic 19th-century transferware often displays fine surface crazing, slight misalignment seam marks in the transferred pattern, and stilt marks on the underside base from kiln placement. The weight of heavy earthenware and soft tonal bleeding in the underglaze colour also indicate age.
