This early 20th-century Georgian Revival plant stand takes the form of a carved mahogany torchere, finished in a dark brown tone with visible surface fading to the top from use. The shaped top provides an 11 by 11-inch surface area, supported by a turned and carved stem incorporating a fluted column, acanthus leaf details, and spiral reeding. The base consists of a tripod structure with three cabriole legs decorated with further acanthus leaf carvings, terminating in pad feet. Measuring 123.8 cm high, 49.5 cm wide, and 49.5 cm deep, the stand serves well for displaying a vase of flowers in an empty corner of a hallway or entrance. Its traditional English country house design makes it suitable for period-style interiors, placing plants, sculptures, or decorative objects within domestic living spaces.

FAQs

A torchere stand is a tall, slender accent piece historically designed to hold candles, oil lamps, or decorative items such as urns and house plants.

These stands were predominantly constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, often finished with a hand-rubbed polish to accentuate fine grain details and carved motifs.

Authentic examples feature hand-carved decorative elements, subtle variations in symmetry, historical construction joinery beneath the top plate, and natural age patina within the carved crevices.

Place the stand in an unused corner or foyer to display a trailing house plant, a ceramic vessel, or a small bronze sculpture, adding vertical height and classic architectural texture to the room.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry cloth and apply a quality beeswax paste polish annually, avoiding direct sunlight and moisture to protect the wood finish and grain structure.
