A waywiser, also known as a measuring wheel or perambulator, is an instrument used historically for measuring distances, particularly in surveying, map-making, and road building from the 17th century onwards.

These instruments were typically constructed using seasoned hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut for the frame and wheel, combined with brass dials, glass faces, and iron tyres to protect the wooden wheel.

Authenticity is determined by examining the hand-graduated metal dials, traditional joinery methods, natural patina and wear on the wood, and the presence of period-appropriate mechanical gearing rather than modern components.

This type of sculptural scientific instrument works well as a focal point in a study or hallway, often mounted on a wall or displayed on a stand to highlight its intricate mechanical features.

Preservation involves keeping the object away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations to protect the wood and metal components, occasionally dusting with a dry, soft cloth.
