It was listed by Antique and Unique. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

A rare 19th century blue and white transfer print meat drainer in the ‘Blue Italian’ pattern, which shows a charming rural scene of people and animals enjoying a day by a river with some architectural ruins in the background.

Meat drainers were made to sit into the recess at the bottom of a large meat plate to allow the juices to drain away from the joint of meat. They are highly collectible and look fantastic displayed either on a dresser or shelf, or arranged on a wall. The design of this drainer is lovely and the printing of very good quality - it is the ‘Blue Italian Pattern’ which was a huge success for Spode, but as there is no mark I can’t say if this was made by Spode.

Condition: There are a couple of small chips to the edge. On the rear is a hairline crack which isn’t visible on the front. The glaze is a little crazed and there are some areas of slight discolouration.

Transfer printing was developed in England during the mid-18th century as a method to apply detailed, repeatable copperplate engravings onto ceramic bodies, revolutionising mass production.

These pieces were typically crafted from refined earthenware or ironstone, fired in kilns, and decorated using hand-engraved copper plates to transfer cobalt blue pigment onto the glaze.

Authentic pieces often exhibit subtle glaze imperfections, crazing, soft blue bleeding at the transfer lines, and occasional maker marks or impressed ciphers on the underside.

These items make striking wall display plates or decorative tabletop accessories, adding traditional pattern and historic texture to contemporary or transitional spaces.

Clean gently with warm water and mild soap using a soft cloth, avoiding harsh abrasives, dishwashers, and prolonged soaking to protect the aged glaze and historic surface.
