This early 19th century Georgian pounce pot is a small desk accessory made from dark brown fruitwood with a warm polished finish. The design includes a saucer shaped concave top dish pierced with holes of different sizes arranged in a star pattern, a baluster or bulbous stem, and a moulded circular base showing visible surface wear and darker patination near the middle. The visible details demonstrate traditional turning techniques, with clean concentric mouldings around the foot and bowl rim. It stands approximately 10 cm high, making it a compact desk ornament. In a home today, it functions as a decorative item on an office desk or library table, recalling the writing practices of the Georgian period when pounce was sprinkled onto parchment or used to dry ink prior to the introduction of blotting paper.

A pounce pot, sometimes referred to as a sander, is a small container with a perforated top used prior to the mid-nineteenth century to disperse finely powdered gum sandarac or cuttlefish bone onto paper to prepare the surface for ink writing or to absorb excess ink.

Pounce pots were commonly turned from native hardwoods such as fruitwood, boxwood, walnut, and oak, though finer examples were produced in pewter, silver, brass, or porcelain.

Authentic Georgian treen typically features subtle unevenness from hand-turning, deep natural patination from historic handling, fine shrink lines across the grain, and signs of age-related wear around touchpoints.

A turned wooden pounce pot functions well as a decorative tactile object arranged alongside leather-bound books, vintage brass instruments, or modern stationers items on a desk, mantelpiece, or styled shelf.

Maintain fruitwood treen by dusting with a dry, soft cloth and occasionally applying a small quantity of clear beeswax polish to preserve the timber and patina, keeping the item away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture.
