FAQs

The Sutherland table is a narrow form of drop-leaf table that originated in Victorian Britain, traditionally attributed to the Duchess of Sutherland. Designed to be space-saving, these tables feature exceptionally narrow drop leaves supported by swing-out legs.

These tables were typically crafted from high-grade hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or oak, frequently featuring decorative veneers like burr walnut. Construction involves intricate turning on the legs, gateleg or swing-out support mechanisms, and brass castors.

Authentic period pieces feature traditional joinery, hand-turned wooden components, and timber shrinkage consistent with age. Examination of the underside often reveals period-appropriate fixings, hand-cut screws, and genuine patination on the wood.

A drop-leaf table functions effectively as an occasional surface or console when folded down, and can be easily expanded for serving guests. Pairing it with contemporary seating creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern minimalism.

Maintain antique wooden surfaces by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber cracking. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and occasionally apply a quality beeswax polish to nourish the grain without buildup.
