Refectory tables originated in monasteries during the medieval period, where they were used by monks for communal dining in the refectory.

Traditional refectory tables are constructed from solid hardwoods like English oak, joined with pegged mortise and tenon joints, and reinforced with a long central stretcher.

Authentic pieces often exhibit hand-planed surface irregularities, pegged joinery, timber shrinkage, and traditional oxidisation or patina accumulated over centuries of use.

A refectory table can be grounded in a contemporary space by pairing it with minimalist seating, modern lighting, or contrasting textures to highlight its historical craftsmanship.

Preserve antique oak by avoiding direct sunlight and excessive humidity, cleaning with a dry or barely damp cloth, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax.
