Description

Robert Browning (1812 – 1889) was a prolific Victorian-era poet and playwright widely recognized as a master of dramatic monologue and psychological portraiture. Browning was married to the poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning and is buried in the Poet’s corner in Westminster Abbey.

This book, edited by Augustine Birrell, contains 2 volumes in one and whilst it is only some 3.7cms wide it is printed on extremely thin paper running to a total of some 1534 pages. The first edition was published in 1896 and this 1919 edition is the 18th reprint. Extremely well bound by the highly regarded Riviere bindery in blue half crushed Morocco over cloth boards with finely gilded paneled compartments and a title compartment formed by 5 prominently raised bands. The end papers are marbled, all page edges gilt and it carries a beautifully executed hand drawn illuminated presentation citation, dated December 1926, to the front free end papers, to Mr H E Hurrell choirmaster for 40 years to the Congregational Church choir of King Street, Great Yarmouth.

Internally clean, bright and tightly bound. Some foxing to the first and last few pages as well as to some pages around the two portrait frontispieces. Rippling to pages but no affect to text. Gilding very bright and fresh to spine and covers but somewhat rubbed to page edges. Cloth to boards lightly rubbed and marked in places.

The book is 20.2cms high, 15cms deep 3.7cms wide and has an unpackaged weight of 0.88 kgs.

Robert Riviere established a renowned London bindery in the 19th century, celebrated for exceptional craftsmanship, meticulous hand-tooling in gold leaf, and high-quality leather bindings.

Fine bindings typically utilise high-grade calfskin or morocco leather over rigid boards, featuring raised bands on the spine, marbled endpapers, and genuine gold leaf tooling.

Authentic period bindings exhibit genuine raised bands formed over cords, hand-stamped gilt tooling rather than modern foil printing, and traditional binderies often included subtle binder signatures or stamps.

Displaying leather-bound volumes on bookshelves, library tables, or mantelpieces adds textual warmth, historic character, and sophisticated colour depth to a room.

Preserve leather bindings by keeping them away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity, maintaining stable ambient temperatures, and occasionally applying specialised leather conservation creams to prevent drying.
