Painted porcelain plaques gained immense popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries, often created in European centres like Sevres, Berlin, and Meissen as miniature copies of famous master paintings for collectors.

These pieces typically utilise a hard-paste porcelain blank fired at high temperatures, decorated with finely ground metallic oxide pigments that are fused to the glaze through repeated kiln firings.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the fineness of the brushwork, the presence of kiln stilt marks or makers marks on the reverse, the depth of the glaze, and the natural ageing of the pigments under magnification.

These detailed works pair well with traditional panelled walls or can be used as a focal point within a gallery wall of mixed antique framed art to add historical depth and texture.

Keep porcelain plaques away from direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, display them in stable humidity conditions, and dust gently with a soft, dry brush without using liquid cleaners.
