Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Column and baluster turned legs: early eighteenth-century turning.
Pegged mortise-and-tenon joints throughout the frame: traditional early joinery.
Solid quarter-sawn oak top boards: natural medullary rays running through the grain.
Moulded edge stretchers: typical eight-legged gateleg frame construction.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This large 18th-century Georgian dining table exemplifies rustic farmhouse style through its practical drop-leaf top, turned legs, box stretchers, and swivel gatelegs. Constructed from solid oak, the timber displays a warm brown colour with pronounced medullary rays across the top boards, finished with a developed patina and visible signs of age including replaced hinges and reduced height at the toes. The circular surface allows the piece to seat eight people comfortably. Measuring 70 cm high, 165 cm wide, and 150 cm deep, the table fits naturally into a spacious family dining room or kitchen space as a central gathering point. Daily use benefits from the sturdy frame construction and drop-leaf mechanism, which permits flexible surface area management when hosting meals or entertaining guests in traditional and transitional interiors alike.

Originating in England during the late sixteenth century, gateleg tables became widespread throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Designed as space-saving furniture for homes, they featured hinged leaves supported by pivoting legs that opened like gates.

Eighteenth-century gateleg tables were predominantly constructed from solid native hardwoods, most commonly English oak. Joints were secured using traditional mortise and tenon joinery held with wooden pegs, while legs were shaped on wood lathes to create turned baluster profiles.

Authentic period examples display signs of hand-planed timbers, hand-sawn board undersides, and irregular wooden pegs. Ageing naturally creates deep patination in unpolished crevices, while the lower stretchers typically exhibit uneven wear from historical foot placement.

A gateleg table can be styled alongside contemporary seating, such as simple upholstered or mid-century dining chairs, to create visual contrast. When not in full use, folding one or both leaves allows the piece to serve as a narrow console or side table against a neutral wall.

Routine maintenance requires dusting with a dry microfiber cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timbers patination. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent shrinking, cracking, or joint separation.
