FAQs

Victorian centre tables were prominent fixtures in 19th-century drawing rooms and parlours, designed to stand freestanding in the middle of a room to display decorative items, books, or lamps.

These pieces typically utilised a solid secondary timber core veneered with highly figured burr walnut, often featuring crossbanding, marquetry inlay, and intricately carved solid walnut bases or pillars.

Authenticity is determined by examining the hand-cut dovetails, traditional shellac French polish finishes, natural timber shrinkage patterns, and the quality of the burr walnut veneer applied over a stable mahogany or pine carcase.

It can be positioned as a focal point in an open-plan living space or used as a striking entryway table, contrasting its ornate historical craftsmanship with minimalist modern surroundings.

Preservation involves keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the veneer from cracking, and dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth while avoiding silicone-based polishes.
