This set of three nested Chinese export side tables from the 1920 period offers practical surface space in a gentleman's library or beside a sofa. Made from dark brown hardwood, the tables show a stepped nesting design with floating panel tops, straight squared legs, and carved floral aprons. Visible details include raised rectangular moulding around each tabletop, intricate openwork woodcarving beneath the surface aprons, and a white price tag resting on the top surface. The construction allows the smaller tables to slide neatly beneath the largest one when not in use, measuring 70 cm high, 49 cm wide, and 36 cm deep overall. In a contemporary home, these versatile side tables work well placed at the end of a sofa to hold lamps, drinks, or decorative objects. The dark timber finish complements traditional and eclectic interior schemes alike, providing accessible tiers that can be separated around a room for entertaining guests. The straightforward rectangular geometry and traditional Asian carving motifs bring understated character to living spaces without overwhelming existing furniture arrangements.

Nesting tables originated in China during the late Qing period, designed as compact, space-saving tea and display surfaces popular in domestic settings and export trade.

Traditional Chinese furniture utilises dense tropical hardwoods such as rosewood and zitan, constructed using mortise-and-tenon frame-and-panel joinery without metal fasteners.

Authentic pieces feature floating panel tops to allow timber expansion, openwork carved aprons, substantial weight due to dense timber, and smooth joinery details.

Position the set stepped out beside a sofa or arrange the tables individually across a room to add dark timber tones and sculptural carved detail.

Maintain hardwood surfaces by dusting with a soft microfibre cloth, applying natural wax polish periodically, and keeping the item away from direct heat sources.
