Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This mid-19th century Scandinavian country water carrier is an oval wooden vessel constructed from pine staves and supported by bentwood hoops and rope bindings. The piece is finished in original teal blue paint with visible fading and rubbing, accented by white hand-painted script lettering that includes the date 1860, and includes a small turned wooden stopper at the top. Minor old restorations are present on the woodwork. Practical in scale, the vessel measures 35 cm high, 31 cm wide, and 15 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this rustic farmhouse object sits atop a sideboard as a decorative accent or display piece.

FAQs

In rural Scandinavia during the 18th and 19th centuries, wooden water carriers and canteens were crafted for agricultural workers and field hands to transport liquids. Often decorated in regional folk art styles with paint and inscriptions, these vessels served both practical and expressive cultural functions.

These vessels were typically constructed using stave-built techniques or carved wooden sections bound by flexible bentwood hoops. Softwoods such as pine or birch were frequently used, secured with wooden pegs or cordage, and sealed to hold liquids.

Authentic pieces feature historic hand-painted decoration, often including dates, initials, or regional motifs. Natural wear around hand contact points, shrinkage of wood staves over time, and original construction details like bentwood bindings indicate genuine age.

A painted wooden vessel can be placed on open shelving, sideboards, or mantelpieces as a textural accent piece. Its painted finish adds visual interest when paired alongside contemporary ceramics, framed artwork, or neutral backdrop textures.

Keep the object in a climate-controlled environment away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent wood warping or paint flaking. Clean gently using a soft, dry brush or cloth, avoiding solvent-based cleaners or excessive water contact.
