This English writing table dates from the Victorian period of 1860. The piece is constructed from warm brown burr walnut veneer with a tan embossed leather top insert and brass castors. Visible details include carved turned legs, marquetry foliage inlay on the front drawer and top surface, decorative edge moulding, and two lockable drawers alongside a fixed lockable stationery box positioned centrally on the surface. Measuring 71 cm high, 112 cm wide and 64 cm deep, the table stands at 75 cm high including the box. Appropriate for a study, library or home office, the desk provides a functional surface for writing and administrative work while offering enclosed storage compartments within both the main body and the upper stationary box. The compact dimensions allow placement against a wall or centrally within a room, while the castors enable repositioning when required.

Mid-Victorian writing tables produced around the 1860s often featured highly figured burr walnut veneers, hand-carved turned legs, and inset leather writing surfaces. They were designed for correspondence in private libraries and drawing rooms.

English makers favoured solid woods such as oak and mahogany for internal framing, finished with decorative burr walnut or rosewood veneers. Surface tops were routinely inset with gold-tooled leather, accompanied by brass drawer pulls and ceramic or brass castors.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-dovetailed drawer joints, natural timber wear on drawer runners, original brass castors, and hand-carved leg detailing. The underside and back panels typically show unpolished hand-sawn timber.

Position the table as a focal point in a home office or living room, paired with modern lighting and a contemporary chair to create a balanced blend of historical and current design styles.

Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer shrinkage or fading. Clean the wood using beeswax polish applied along the grain, and wipe the leather section with a dry, soft cloth.
