Gillow Walnut 19th Century Kidney Writing Table

19th century
Description

A Stunning Quality 19th Century, Victorian, Burr Walnut Kidney Shaped Writing Table, Having Attractive Old Leather, With Blind Tooled Decoration, Inset To Crossbanded Top, Over Highly Figured Shaped Frieze, With One Drawer, Raised On Elegant Bold Cabriole Legs With Exceptional Original Gilt Bronze Brass Mounted Decoration.

Stamped To Drawer – Gillow & Co, 3576.

This fabulous quality table absolutely oozes elegance, class and sophistication, which of course is no less than one would expect from the well known, highly respected cabinet making firm of Gillow & Co. All of the timbers used in its construction are of the highest possible grade and they have been expertly put together by skilled cabinetmakers. It is also worth noting that the metal decoration is very, very good indeed.

A useful size for its original purpose as a writing table, or alternatively just as a small centre or occasional type table in any room this table would be a great addition to any environment. All of the gilt bronze decoration appears to be original and there has been very few repairs or replacements, apart from the leather top, which is a high quality old replacement and remains in good condition. That said should one wish then the leather could very easily and relatively inexpensively be replaced.

As with all items which we offer for sale this Kidney Shaped Table has been inspected and attended to in our workshops by highly skilled, professionaly trained antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale, ensuring that it is ready for immediate placement within the home.

The table is of course stamped Gillow & Co 3576, which suggests that it was made around 1875 based on the firms records and serial number system which was introduced around the mid 19th century, but not always used by all makers on all furniture. Gillows of Lancaster are of course one of the most famous English cabinet making firms of all time, well known and respected for their quite exceptional quality output from the late 18th century all the way through to the early 20th century.

This 19th-century Victorian kidney writing table by Gillow and Co belongs to the French Revival style. Constructed from burr walnut with a warm brown tone, the piece displays a crossbanded top inset with a blind-tooled leather skiver, a shaped frieze, and cabriole legs ending in brass mounts. Gilt bronze espagnolette mounts decorate the upper legs. The table stands 75 cm high, 96.5 cm wide, and 58.5 cm deep. In a contemporary home, the table functions as a desk for writing tasks or as an occasional centre table in a living room, hallway, or study. The walnut timber shows a highly figured grain pattern across the frieze and legs, while the leather top exhibits edge tooling details. The corner mounts depict cast metal faces with ornate foliate scrolls extending down the leg profiles.

Kidney-shaped writing tables emerged in France during the eighteenth century and became widely popular across Europe in the nineteenth century. Designed with a central concave curve, the form allowed writers to sit closer to the working surface while maintaining an elegant, crescent-like silhouette.

High-grade 19th-century writing tables were constructed using fine cabinet woods such as burr walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, often enhanced with marquetry or crossbanding. Writing surfaces featured hand-tooled leather skivers, accompanied by cast and hand-chased gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts.

Authentic pieces feature period construction techniques including hand-cut dovetail joints, original patinated timber, and heavy, detailed brass or ormolu castings. Prominent makers such as Gillows of Lancaster often stamped signatures or serial numbers on drawer edges or undersides.

Because kidney tables are fully finished on all sides, they function exceptionally well floating in the centre of a room, within a bay window, or as a focal point in a master bedroom suite, paired with a contemporary or period chair.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish sparingly along the grain. Clean the leather surface with a specialised leather balm, and avoid abrasive cleaners on gilt bronze mounts to preserve the historic finish and oxidisation.
